You can buy used GE, or Motorola repeaters for $800 and up through places like Gregory Electronics (in Pennsylvania, I think) or California Radio in Montrose, Colorado, or another outfit in El Paso, Texas, etc.... While I have not used either brand mentioned, one look at the construction should be revealing, and our Colorado frequency coordinator gags every time someone mentions the brand names listed. He has left me with the impression that all the major interference problems in the state can be traced to those brands, either transmitter of receiver deficiencies being the primary cause. I have no first-hand experience with these machines, but I have worked on GE, Motorola, RCA and Johnson RF gear, and don't believe I'd put anything less on a mountain.
