We are running 4.2BSD UNIX on a VAX 11/750 and need a fast, reliable Fortran compiler. We have already reinstalled the old 4.1 compiler but even that crawls compared to a (dare I say it ) VMS kit not a million miles away from us. As far as our present setup is concerned heavy numerical work is a complete non-starter. Can anybody give me information about a) faster fortran under 4.2; b) use of floating-point accelerators under VAX/4.2. performance figures are especially welcome. Yours in anticipation Paul Middlehurst ( ... {UK}!ukc!reading!cybavax!paul )
