The plot of the book "2010" concerned the aliens (played by Ob O'Lysk) encouraging the life on Europa to grow (in much the same way as they helped the apes in "2001"). Hyams took out the Chinese (thus ripping out a VERY IMPORTANT part of the plot) and put in a "sledgehammer-on-the-head" political subplot, because, as I've said, he's a hack. Turning Jupiter into a star WAS NOT DONE FOR HUMANS AT ALL, but strictly for the Europans (Europeans?). Read the book. Forget the movie. Shoot Hyams before he does more damage.
