i did it the UNIX way, through e-mail.  she (melinda) was a freshman struggling
to get an f77 compile to work.  i was a junior, a student assistant
in the land of nerds -- the local terminal room.  she thought
i knew everything about computers.  boy, did i have her fooled.

i'm not shy at all around female types, but i thought computer mail
would be an interesting alternative to the normal phone call "are you
busy" kind of thing.  

if you ARE the shy type, a computer letter is nice because you can
compose the letter, plan it all out etc. etc.  also, people seem to like
'different' ways of being asked out.
