No. There is no good explanation for 1) Spock putting on the goggles,
2) Kirk watching, and 3) the transporter "disappearing" them.  What we
see in that episode is an example of dumb editing.  We see 1) Kirk say
bye-bye, 2) Spock beam them down, and then 3) a shot of Kirk walking out
the door.  And that is the extent of the scene in the transporter room.
The editing mistake?  3 should have come right before clip 2 instead
of after.  Keep that inmind the next time you see the episode -- it works.
