After a recent visit to Southern California (LA), I was appalled
at the quality (sic) of local TV (LA being our national media center
and all).  I attempted to remedy the situation by looking into what
was offered on cable in the LA area.  Having grown up in a fairly
rural area north of Seattle, and having had cable installed in 1972
(maybe 1973), I would have thought that everyone in LA would have been
wired (cabled?) long ago.  Not so!  Now I understand that cable evolved first 
in hilly areas to improve reception and then moved to flat areas such
as the LA basin, but given the relative population densities, I would
have thought that LA would have caught up long ago.  You people in
Southern Ca. do not know what you are missing. 
    
I moved from Seattle proper to the sticks 2 1/2 years ago. After missing
cable TV for 1 year, I spent over $4000 to have a satellite dish installed.
My area will never meet the minimum population density required to 
support cable, and so none is ever going to be installed. Now $4000 is not
cheap (~ 1/6 of my gross income at the time), so you can see that I think
that satellite TV is worth it.  The question of whether or not cable tv
is worth it or not really depends on the local cable system.  I could
not believe that what cable exists in LA does not have Canadian TV.
For those unfortunate souls that have never watched Canadian TV,
lets just say that it is a combination of the best of american tv,
british tv, public broadcasting, and the National Film Board of
Canada.  

	To all you cable companies that might be reading:

	Give me Canadian TV or give me a radio!
