I think calling him the artist would be misleading, since some strips have a writer and an artist, for instance, Millar/Hinds for Tank Macnamara. I think that author is okay, but not perfect. Other terms such creator or producer, could have misleading connotations. You would probably have to call him the Writer/Artist if you wanted to be sure, but that is rather clumsy.
