If you can't afford a small house then you must be renting.
If you are renting, someone must own the house that you are renting in.
It is possible that the person that owns your house is holding the house
  as a second (or third or fiftieth) house.
If he can't take the interest deduction (Say $2400/Yr.) then he will
  be placed in a position of loss of income.
RESULT: He raises your rent by $200/Mo. and you get screwed even more.
