Without answering on a point by point basis, the reason Spielberg makes a lot
of money is because he is an excellent director (in the technical sense; he 
knows how to set up scenes, what shots to use, how to use tiny details to
illuminate characters, etc.) who makes films about stories that appeal to a lot
of people.  You found "ET" corny.  I didn't, though it certainly had that
potential, and tens of millions of others didn't.  You may be right and we
wrong, but merely asserting that you are isn't going to convince me.  There's
a real simple solution to your problem: don't go see Spielberg's movies.  He
only directs one every two years or so, nowadays; if you wish to avoid the ones
he produces, as well, that's no more than four or five a year.  There are
usually half a dozen or so Speilberg ripoffs per year, but they're easy to
spot and avoid, too.  Thus, by skipping no more than ten Hollywood movies a
year, you can be largely free from Steven Spielberg.  There's still the question
of related merchandise, but buying some of it and smashing it in inventive ways
should make you feel better.  If you'd prefer not to subsidize it, just growl
at it in shop windows.
