Speaking of checking the record, were you aware that (serious) deficit
spending started in 1969???? Before that, borrowing was in the
vicinity of $1,000,000/year, in order to balance the budget due to
unexpected expenditures (defense overruns, etc.), not planned
borrowing at a massive scale.  FDR's deficits were used to pull a
country out of a laisse-faire depression, then to fight a war.
Nixon started major spending to pay for an escalation in Vietnam,
in order to force  the NVA to talk (War is peace, right?).
