  When I get a scroll of genocide, I usually genocide killer bees.
I found that it does kill off the bees, but the hives remain with
their supplies or royal jelly still intact. Other favorites are
dragons (if I don't have a ring of fire protection) and xans.

Also, I have been down to the maze several times without finding the amulet.
My guess as to where to go from there is to find a wand of wishing, wish
for a ring of teleport control, some potions of confusion and some scrolls
of teleport. When  you get confused and read the scroll, just tell it you
want the next level down.
