Carolina at Chapel Hill Lines: 45 I suppose I should be happy that I just got to level 16 in one piece. After all, I had taken care of several large dogs (I was out of tripe and other tidbits to pacify them), shot some cockatrices from a distance with my trusty arrows, and spent plent of time on Elbereth. But I found a ghost's backpack full of all sorts of tasty goodies on Level 16. So I picked up a couple of items at a time, checked them out in some way (when I could), disposed of the items I didn't want and went back for a couple more. Things were going very well, until I looked under a splint mail. No warning. My pal the dead cockatrice was sitting and waiting, and hack greeted my consternation with -- Touching a cockatrice cadaver is a fatal mistake -- You die -- Question 1: Is there any way I can avoid getting burned by the cockatrice cadavers that killed a ghost short of ignoring the pile of goodies that ghost left behind? Question 2: Is there a way I can convince monsters to leave their corpses behind? When I finally get a leppie in the early game I'm quite disappointed when it just leaves behind some gold and food; I'd rather have the corpse. Question 3: When my doggie (named Dbx-encoder! :-) ) eats a leppie (and he always tries to beat me to the corpse) he starts flitting around just like I want to, and I must usually leave him behind at an early stage. Is there a way to remove teleporting? Question 4: Sometimes when I hit a monster or it hits me the message reporting the blow ends with a period, other times it ends with an exclamation point. Is this indicative of the severity of the blow? Lastly, I've run across some interesting dog names on ghost levels here. My favorites so far have been ^L (that's control-L, which clears the screens on our ttys; thus each time ^L hits, misses, or you hit or miss him, the screen clears! On a fast tty this is cute; on a slow dial-up it's quite frustrating), and 'the harmless puppy' (as in 'The harmless puppy hits!' and does you 15 hp of damage!). I'd like to hear of other's favorite dog names, either chosen or encountered in the dungeon. -- -Andrew Andrew Glassner glassner@unc decvax!mcnc!unc!glassner
