The telnet daemon that we had on our mt Xinu 4.2BSD Vax, and
our Pyramid OSx/90 were both wrong in that they were not
updating the utmp files.  We installed a newer version and
things now work.  Anyone else who has this problem can contact
me and we can work out a legal way for you to get the new
source...
