The zip code is a geographical hierarchy such as you are proposing: National Area | --post office or delivery area | | --segment | V V V -- -- 32811-7307 ___ -- ^ ^ | | | --Sector --Sectional center (SCF) or large city I.e., moving from left to right identifies the geographical location more and more exactly.
