Ken (of Intel) didn't mention it in his reply to the above, but Intel's partner(chip), AMD, has a subtle series of ads in the June 10, 1985 Electronic Engineering Times that mention AMD's price for their 8MHz PLCC Am80186 is $14.95 for 1K.
