So long as we're talking about mail order, let me throw my favorite
camera store into the ring... You won't find it in the back of any
of the photo_rags, because it's not a photo specialty store.

It's called Whole Earth Access and they have a few stores locally
in the bay area, but I understand they do Mail Order. I've never done
mail order from them, but they have prices that are extremely
(read: close enough to null out shipping from New York (!!)... )
competitive. Also, they have a showroom where you can TOUCH, and
they speak english (major complaint about going into stores in NY --
I bought a body *in person* once and had to know exactly what I wanted
and how much I wanted to pay for it... I also had to speak clearly...)

I recently saw a Nikkor 300mm f/4.5 IF-ED with case from there
for under $500. Full warrantee, etc., and I got to hold it and try it
out -- note: If you are thinking about the non-IF-ED 300 f/4.5
and haven't seen this one, CHECK IT OUT !!! For only about $200 more
you get more than your money's worth...

That's pretty typical of the their prices. They also are one of the
few stores in the San Francisco Area that stock the longer IF-ED's,
i.e., the 300 f/2.8 the 400 and even a 600 f/4 every once and a while!

I only know about their Nikon selection, but they have a pretty
knowledgable staff and don't sell by commission. I suppose if ther
is enough interest I could track down the address to send $3 to for
their catalogue...
