To which, as you might expect, my response was "SAY WHAT?" The tale that unfolded was that she had been engaged to a person in San Francisco (remember we're in San Diego at the time) and that they both wanted to have other relationships in the meantime. They planned on getting together for real and getting married that summer. Not being an overly noble person, I tossed her clothes (er, her shoes!) to her and asked her brusquely to put them on. I then walked her to her car and told her to not bother me any more. It took me a long time to get over the feeling of being a 'toy' rather than a real person having a real relationship. -- Dave Taylor
