I'd moved to town and in with him 2 months previously. We were standing together at folk dancing when I met the woman. Eventually, I learned to spend part of my 'standing' time not next to him. [notes: He was a great roommate. Shortly after the turn-down he started dating the woman he eventually married (she had the same 1st name as the 'turn-down lady'!).
