    I got an interesting turn-down from a female friend a while
ago, and found it extremely suspicious . . .

    This deserves a set-up:  We had dated a few times before, and
had a date set for a Saturday night.  She called to break that date
with the excuse of 'the guy my sister broke up with 2 weeks ago just
announced his engagement, and I have to be with her'.  Ok, fine - 
mental maintenance seemed to be in order.  But, when she cancelled
the re-scheduled date, this was the excuse:  'My sister's really
upset again, and I have to be with her.  You see, Bruce Springstein
just got married, and she's really broken up . . .'.  I didn't call
her back, and she hasn't called me since . . .  Ahh, well.
