Here in Los Angeles there is a Sierra 20's/30's singles group that sponsors events ranging from beach walks to serious rock climbing. Since the people are there to enjoy the event, there is a pre-existing common interest, taking off the pressure of "idiot lines" you need to come up with at singles bars. I am also pleasantly amazed at the high level of intelligence of this group. It's the first group of people I've encountered, outside of academia, where I don't have to be apologetic for my vocabulary.
