(sorry I can't quote the original reference, but I'm a bit green
and have yet to learn all the fancy tricks)
Even better than joining the Sierra club is joining one of their special
interest groups. Here in Los Angeles there is a Sierra 20's/30's singles
group that sponsors events ranging from beach walks to serious rock
climbing. Since the people are there to enjoy the event, there is
a pre-existing common interest, taking off the pressure of "idiot lines"
you need to come up with at singles bars.
 I am also pleasantly amazed at the high level of intelligence of this
group. It's the first group of people I've encountered, outside of academia,
where I don't have to be apologetic for my vocabulary.
