Chicago - Computation Center Lines: 44 Just thought I would post a note on the Cubs mushrooming injury problems. Today (Tueday 4th) the Cubs beat the Braves 5-3 although fielding a team off the bench. LF Thad Bosley CF Davey Lopes (semi-regular since Matthews is out) RF Keith Moreland (regular - playing with an inflamed ulnar (?) nerve) 1B Leon Durham (regular) 2B Chris Speier SS Larry Bowa (regular of sorts - batting ~.190, no range) 3B Ron Cey (regular) C Jody Davis (regular) P Dick Ruthven (spot starter replacing Sutcliffe) Of the nine positions only five were being played by the regular starters. As a result of good play off the bench, the Cubs have been able to hang in there with the Mets. Current Injuries are: Ryne Sandberg: Bruised chest, can't bat. Availability day to day Bob Dernier: Sore foot. Availability day to day Garry Matthews: Knee surgery, recovering well. Available July 1 Steve Trout: Inflamed ulnar(?) nerve in elbow. Planned to start Sat. Rick Sutcliffe: Torn hamstring. Planned to start Friday. The two notes of interest out of this are how hard Sutcliffe worked to get himself back in ~20 days from a relatively serious injury, and how well Lopes is playing (4hrs, 20 rbis, 12sb, tied with Moreland for game wng rbis) after sitting on the bench. It will be hard to take him out when Matthews returns. "It might be... It could be... It is!! Holy Cow! Another Cub homerun!" -- James Cooper ..!ihnp4!gargoyle!sphinx!wjnz
