As expected, the O's canned Joe Altobelli in the afternoon and announced that Earl Weaver would be back on Friday; Cal Ripken Sr. managed tonight (and one could observe slight differences in moves by Ripken as opposed to Joe; perhaps Ripken was lucky, but the moves worked and convinced some people that the front-office boys just might be right. Ripken is tutored in the Earl Weaver school of thought...). As for myself, I broke my 2-game losing streak at the stadium; I had driven to both of those games, so tonight my friend drove (we had a 2-game winning streak in his car) and as I said, things were better. A silly little superstition, I agree, but I know I'm not the only one. When Earl is back for the first time tomorrow, there is a very good chance that Ripken, and not Earl, will bring the lineup card to the plate, simply because he brought it up tonight, after which the Birds finally won. -- Call-Me: Pete Cottrell, Univ. of Md.
