First, are you sure the system is dead, or are the tty setting incorrect.
You may have to type some explicit linefeeds (^J) to get a prompt.
If that works, they turn on echoing with stty echo ^J.  If that works, then
you need no reboot.  Now, all I've told you is how to recover without
rebooting - why cu dumps core is another problem altogether.
