Sorry, not true. Assault is _attempting_ to harm someone. Touching another person is battery. Pointing a gun at someone is assault with a deadly weapon even if no shots are fired. If a person waves a gun around in the presence of a crowd they can be charged with a separate deadly weapon assault count for every person in range. Verbal assault is certainly not as serious a crime as armed assault, but it can do real psychological damage.
