I didn't read the article your refering to. But my natural response is, if it's good (bad?) enough for one newsgroup it sholud be the same for all. Why do so many people on the net feel it's OK to offend others only in designated areas of the net? Either you can offend people everywhere or you shouldn't do it anywhere.
