(Ref: some articles a little while ago about 'idiot lights' that tell you when to shift gears.....) I happened to come across this: (while catching up on my reading:-)) Popular Mechanics (June 1979) had an article about building a device that indicates when gears should be shifted. Actually there are 3 lights: green for 'get ready', yellow for 'shift now' and red for 'you missed it'.(Great! 3 idiot lights :)) It is possible to set the RPM switch points for each light so that it can be optimized for your vehicle . The article claims that these lights can be used to teach operation of a manual shift and that it is useful in automatics for monitoring transmission slippage . The circuit consists of 1 IC (CMOS AND 4081) and a few dozen other small components. GDS
