I was once on a Navy C54 that lost its UHF and VHF while in a storm
going into Atlanta, and we patched through on the HF, by telephone,
to the tower for control.  We had also lost a door and an engine at
that point.  I had my sky-diving rig on board, and was seriously considering 
making use of the open door.
