Duct tape *does* have its limits. I went to a local upholstry professional, and he happened to have an intact seat cover from a Porsche he had re-done. Now the bike has a beautiful seat cover that no doubt is better than new. The whole job cost me $30 or $35 This topic is particularly relevant to me as my current bike's seat just started to tear. Once that first rip forms, there's no stopping it (you think cancer spreads fast).
