When I first ran into the problem (with a Gosling emacs on 4.1), I bound search keys to esc-s and esc-r (for consistency) and quote-character to cntrl-t, losing the regular expression searches and rebinding transpose-characters to the unused esc-t. When I really need to use a regular expression in a search, I do it with either esc-x or with grep in a compilation window. I admit I'm amazed at the number of people using cntrl-\ and cntrl-[, but I guess it's all a matter of individual tastes. "When you are about to die, a wombat is better than no company at all."
