Lines: 33 Keywords: GNU Emacs Manual Scribe As all of you know, GNU Emacs Manual was released as a set of files to be processed with TeX. Since, at the time of release, we did not have TeX installed in our system, I converted the files so that they could be processed using Scribe (Version 4), the license for which we have. This has the following advantages. * For sites that have only Scribe and no TeX, this is the only way to have a readable version of the GNU Emacs manual. * While it is true that TeX is available to the public free, as far as I know there is, as yet, no laser printer available for free (:-)) that will produce printed copies of the TeX sources. Because of the design philosophy involved in TeX (the output of TeX must be identical, irrespective of the output device), there is no device driver to produce processed output from TeX to devices like terminals and ordinary line printers that have only one font, which is fixed width. Whereas, Scribe does have a driver for dumb printing devices like ttys and lpts. * I also like to have the manual on-line, so that I can consult it inside Emacs. I have converted emacs.tex and ggloss.tex to corresponding .mss files that can be used with Scribe, Version 4 (probably even earlier versions). This message is a query to find out if anyone would want this. If there are sufficient responses, I'll put the scribe sources and the scribe output for dumb devices, in a centrally located site. If mit-prep would agree to having these files available, that would be the ideal location. Please respond in mail to me, so that I can condense the responses and post in net.emacs. --Vijay--
