I stopped dealing with these assholes several years ago due to a couple
of very similar experiences (so, I'm a slow learner).  Now, I send packages
by either USMail or someone like Federal Excess, Hairborne, Flying Kitty
Cats.  There are enough of them that I don't have to deal with Useless
Pencil-necked Shitheads unless someone sends me something.  I just love
it when the truck pulls into the driveway and my dog pulls his Cujo routine.
All of a sudden, they're SO polite! :-)
