How about turning off the terminal?  I tried it once when I was down to 
2 or 3 hp and I was hitting an Orc.  I saw :"The orc hits --More--"
so I turned off the terminal.  Then I played again and found that the game
was saved and I was still alive.
But then again this could be machine/site dependent....
