Just so it doesn't take a whole transceiver or receiver with it when it dies. I do NOT think it is reasonable to have a designed-in "service call" at 7 years (plus or minus 5 or so), especially when it is UNreasonable to expect anyone other than the manufacturer to be able to perform the necessary service successfully. Under the circumstances, it's more like a renewal of your license to use the radio, at whatever price the manufacturer feels like charging you at the time. In summary, I might well elect to lease or rent an ICOM radio with this kind of design, but I will never BUY one. Especially a 7-year-old used one!!! -John S., W3IKG
