Well, that's a lose, because ".ARPA" will go away soon. And for good reason. Time has come for UUCP to either jump on the bandwagon or get lost in the dust. Domaining UUCP is a MUST, rather than a hope. > ...but since uucp -> ARPA -> uucp gateways are > frowned upon (and nigh impossible, I've tried it many a time) in > reality I don't think it is a problem. Is it? Ah, but it happens all the time. I don't think DARPA would like to hear it, but it indeed does. The problem is that if you can get mail to an ARPA host, most of the mailers out there make no distinction between locally generated mail and that which is gatewayed in from somewhere else, so it looks like you are sending from the arpa host, thus you can send to anywhere. I know of no filtering of stuff done this way. Alas, you have to be careful of the syntax you use to avoid the problems Chuq mentions (wrong assumptions, etc...)... I have some ideas of an easy way to domain-out UUCP, but it's gonna take about a dozen major UUCP sites (strategically placed...) to cooperate (namely the authoratative machine for each of a bunch of second level domains to be defined -- see Mark Horton's documents on "UUCP Subdomain Requirements" and "What is a domain" for details)... There seems to be no way to have 1 top-level machine, but if a bunch of machines cooperated in such a manner as to break the net up into smaller, more manageable pieces, things could run smoothly and life would be good. THINK NAMESERVER. THINK DOMAIN. If you don't understand these terms, drop me a note and I'll send you the documents to read. DO YOUR HOMEWORK... SAVE UUCP FROM ALMOST CERTAIN DEATH... Chuq -- you seem generally interested in the future of this net. Me too. Let's get something rolling.
