robert adams reminds us that "Rob Pike, in a USENIX presentation,
brought up the point about why would we want to have a single
addressing format."

in that talk (and in their paper) pike and weinberger deplore rfc819
syntax.  bangist (or uucp) notation appears to be the only one in
widespread use that is simple and uniform.
