In article <543@down.FUN> honey@down.FUN (Peter Honeyman) writes: jordan, first you suggest "jordan@ucb-vax.BERKELEY.EDU -- end of discussion" then you propose RPN as a panacea. so did you mean jordanucb-vaxBERKELEYEDU@..? Peter... too cute for words... unfortunately, while you were studying directed graph theory, you neglected number systems. Too bad that in RPN there are separators (spaces) so that 4 3 2 + * is unambiguous (i.e., isn't really "43 2 + *" or similar...). Thus in the example above, "@" and "." are separators (to carry the analogy further than need be taken...)... In the BNF spec (rfc819, in case you aren't familiar with the literature), a mailbox is defined as ::= "@" so that the "@" is a meta-character that separates the local part from the domain, for the purpose of using the domain part in other applications... "@" and "." are not, as you have suggested, OPERATORS. I am not saying that Polish Postfix has anything to do with domaining, but merely pointing out that there are sometimes better ways of breaking up an ambiguity than by specifying precidence with parenthesis (or {} for that matter, as csh treats them special, as it does with !...). Sorry to all you who KNEW this already, but I thought I'd better make sure Peter isn't at a disadvantage in this discussion. re: dissimilar networks... Well, just because they are doesn't mean they have to stay that way. You still have not presented a valid reason why UUCP cannot (and/or shouldn't) be domained. ------------ Jordan Hayes jordan@UCB-VAX.BERKELEY.EDU UC Berkeley ucbvax!jordan +1 (415) 835-8767 37' 52.29" N 122' 15.41" W
