To update my own article, please consider the following definitions found in the
Random House College Dictionary.  I realize this in not a medical dictionary.  I
would like to see some similar definitions from a medical dictionary.

"addicted"  -  devoted or given up to a practice or habit or to something
habit-forming, as a narcotic, cigarettes, etc.
                              ^^^^^^^^^^

"addiction"  -  the state of being addicted, esp. to a habit-forming drug, to such
an extent that cessation causes severe trauma.
