By all means purchase the book "Interfacing to S-100/IEEE-696 Microcomputers"
by Sol Libes and Mark Garetz, published by Osborne/McGraw-Hill (1981).
This book will answer all your questions and give you a bunch of useful
circuits for rolling your own I/O boards.
