There is a good chance it was the disks, not the drive, in this case. The media (coated polyester film, generally) of floppy disks has high thermal and humidity expansion coefficients. I recently moved my Mac to my basement (oh, that's right, no basements in super-state CA :-) ) because my upstairs was too hot for the Mac's convection cooling to work well.
