Aparently original Coke used a sizable percentage of the world's production of vanilla beans. New Coke contanins artifical vanilla. (Of course, the formulas are secret, this is just a guess.). So cheaper sweetener is just part of the reason that the Coca Cola Company would want to push new Coke.
