I think it is rather clear from Kyle's flashbacks (flashforwards?) that he was a regular foot soldier in the war against the machines and not the leader of the revolt. I tend to wonder about what kind of man John Connor was. It must take a certain kind of ruthlessness to send to your own father off on what you know is a suicide mission. But then any other sort of man probably wouldn't have won the war.
