Just a couple of additions:

ORIGINALLY (and I mean *way* back there) the Star Wars saga was 12
parts.  I don't know if it was cut down to 9 before or after George
went to see some hot-shots in Hollywood.

Also, ORIGINALLY, Luke was a girl.  I guess eventually he decided
that the world just wasn't ready for that and he settled on Leia to
be a strong enough female character.  I think "A New Hope" was pretty
much sticking to the original, but with the next two, you can't tell how
much George might have wandered from his original to make it sell better
or fit the times better (after all, he wrote the original stuff a LONG
time ago).

As far as I have heard about the other 6 films, he was going to take
a 10 year vacation before doing them.  Then he wasn't going to do them
at all (which will make SW4, SW5, and SW6 look pretty silly in 50 years
when there's no parts 1,2, and 3).  Once I even heard that Linda Ronstadt
(with whom he was said to be "involved" at least at that time...life's
tough, ain't it?) had talked him back into doing the other 6.  That's
the last I heard about any of that, though, and I don't know how much of
it is/was true.  I guess we'll just have to wait and see.  Or maybe
read about it in the National "for people with inquiring minds...like
my pet wombat" Inquirer. :-)
