I wanted a CD player now.  I decided on the Sony CDP-302.  List is $550, I
told the salesman I would pay for it today if he priced it at $500 (Pacific
Stereo).  No problem (he did have to "check with his manager").  I did have
to wait for the next shipment, which was a couple of days.  So you don't have
to pay list price, but don't expect to get as close to mail-order prices as
you sometimes can.
