Some clarifications and additions: Premchand's (D R Srivastava's pseudonym) masterpiece is called "Gaban" (Embezzlement) if I remember right. One of my favorite RK Narayan books is a children's book but absolutely charming nevertheless: it's called "Swami". I hope you laugh as much as I did at the passage where Swami's cricket team arranges a match with another team with this imposing precondition: the match must begin on the dot of "11 noon". Khushwant Singh's book about the partition is called "Train to Pakistan". Personally, I never did like "Freedom at Midnight" by Collins & LaPierre. It is highly sensationalized and very exciting, but seems more a novel than a historical, accurate account. Prakash Tandon (ex head of NCAER in New Delhi) has written a few books (one of which is "Punjabi Century", I think) which are worth reading. Finally, if you haven't heard of this famous underground author, find someone who will tell you about Mastram. A true giant in his field. regards, Dilip. TI/Austin. dsouza@ti-csl
