If you look at your cat's nails closely you will see pink inside the nail, it is ok to cut the nails above the pink but NEVER on or below the pink. If you cut the pink you are cutting part of the cats toe, similiar to cutting your own nails if you cut too low. It can hurt. Just cut the tips and the cat won't know the difference. It can't feel it's nails getting cut, but it will feel it if you cut on the pink area. I hope this helps.
