There's a recent book by Edward Tufte called "The Visual Display of Quantitative Information" which is far and away the best book on what good and bad statistics look like that I know. One of its principles is never mix up your scales; another is keep it simple. Anyhow, it's a great book. This Newsweek example should have gone in it as a classic boner.
