I saw this show, and my impression was that the symptom was fluid collecting in the in the head, compressing the brain and stunting it. This is subtlely different than having a large portion of the brain destroyed or removed. I would expect brains suffering from the former to be able to adapt better and appear more normal than in the latter case.
