One such might be Melinda >> Snodgrass's Star Trek novel, _The_Tears_of_the_Singers_. Well, there was a story by Arthur C Clarke, called _The_Ultimate_Melody_ (I think). It appeared in his collection _Tales_From_the_White_Hart_. BTW, did those stories by Clarke create the "tall tales in a bar" subgenre, or did someone else do it even earlier?
