The book is by Michael McCollum.  I wholeheartedly second the
above recommendation.  The author also wrote a very good set of
parallel-universe stories which were collected and expanded in
the book _A_Greater_Infinity_.  I've been waiting for a sequel to
the latter for a while now; other than the two books and one other
short story written with his wife, he hasn't done anything else
that I know of.
