They wrote some pretty strange (though, perhaps over-produced) music. I
thought for a while I was hearing re-formed Beatles.

Check out Klaatu - Klaatu (has 'Calling Occupants')
      and Klaatu - Hope

Also, the Carpenters recorded 'Calling Occupants'.  Not nearly as interesting.
